The Washington Form That Prints Its Own Price, and It Is Zero

The Platform Is Genuinely Good Software

Start with the part we are not going to argue about. ZenBusiness builds the most approachable interface in this industry. Filings, stored documents and upcoming deadlines live in one place, the setup flow assumes no prior knowledge of business paperwork, and it is obvious that somebody spent real effort on how the thing feels to use. Someone shopping for a single place to run all their state paperwork, with the agent seat as one tile among many, is buying something coherent.

That is not what we sell and we are not going to pretend it is. Our product is a Washington street address, one bill a year, and a portal where documents show up. If the software is the reason you are there, the software is worth paying for.

One Product With Two Different Prices

Purchased by itself, detached from any formation package, ZenBusiness prices the agent product at $99 in year one, on top of the state's own charges. At renewal the amount becomes $199, and it stays $199. Neither number is concealed; both sit in the open on their pricing.

The question is which of the two you spend most of your years paying. Washington expects a named agent on your record for the entire time the entity is registered here, which makes this a recurring purchase rather than a one-time one, and a recurring purchase is honestly described by its recurring number. Almost every year you own the company is a $199 year.

What Washington Charges for Its Own Transactions

Look at what the state is willing to bill for and what it is not. Washington wants $180 to bring a limited liability company into existence, adds an unstated processing charge if you file that through the portal, collects $70 every year to let the company keep existing, and fines you $25 for missing the deadline. It collects nothing whatsoever when you hand the registered agent role to somebody else.

A $199 renewal carries an unspoken assumption inside it: that leaving is difficult enough to be worth paying to avoid. In this state, leaving is free and fits on one page.

A Checkbox That Announces Its Own Price

The strange, useful detail about Washington's change filing is that the form itself tells you what it costs. Down in the fee section there is a box labeled "No Filing Fee," and ticking it is how you declare the amount due. Not a footnote, not a line on a schedule somewhere else on the website: a checkbox on the document, printed by the state, whose entire function is to record that nothing is owed.

Two other sources agree, which is why we are comfortable saying it flatly. The administrative rule that sets the Corporations & Charities Division's fees prints "No fee" against a change of registered agent, and the published fee schedule prints "No Fee" in the same row. Three independent confirmations of the same zero.

Washington will, if you want, sell you speed on top of that nothing. Expedited handling is $100. You are allowed to pay a hundred dollars to move a free filing up the queue, and occasionally somebody has a closing date that makes it worth doing.

One qualification before that arithmetic gets carried away. Nine of those hundred dollars separate us from BetterLegal, whose published annual rate is $90, so the floor of this market belongs to them and not to us. What $99 is: a low published price that never turns into a higher one.

Switch Your Washington Registered Agent From ZenBusiness

The document is titled the Statement of Change/Designation of Registered Agent. Washington assigns it no number and identifies it by name alone, so there is no code to hunt for. It goes to the Corporations & Charities Division, either as paper in the mail or electronically through CCFS, the state's filing portal. The fee is the zero described above, and online submissions generally clear the queue faster than mailed ones.

One prerequisite governs the whole sequence. Washington will not record a designation the incoming agent has not agreed to, and that consent has to exist in a record before the appointment does.
