$249 a Year Is Three and a Half Washington Annual Reports

The Brand Is Real and It Is Worth Something

Ask a stranger to name one online legal company and LegalZoom is the answer you will usually get, a recognition built over two decades rather than bought last quarter. For an owner who would rather deal with a large, established company than a specialist they have never heard of, that comfort is a genuine product feature. Nobody has to defend choosing it.

Agent service there runs $249 a year, flat, renewing automatically, and no introductory discount surfaced anywhere in our July 2026 review. The figure is honest and it is easy to find. What follows is not an accusation about candor.

Converting $249 Into Washington's Own Currency

Abstract price comparisons slide off. Washington gives us a better unit, because it charges every registered business the same recurring amount and prints it.

The first row is the one to sit with. Washington's for-profit annual report costs $70, set by RCW 23.95.515. The single mandatory payment your company owes the state each year, the one that keeps it alive on the register, is less than a third of what one vendor charges to receive your mail.

A Quick Way to Date Any Washington Guide

That $70 is new. The legislature raised the report fee in 2026, and plenty of comparison writing about this state still quotes the superseded amount. If you are reading anything at all about Washington compliance this year, check whether it prints $70. Being stale on the one fee every registered entity pays is not a promising sign about the rest of the page.

The Statute Does Not Grade on Brand

Here is where the premium stops buying anything. Washington's registered agent rules impose the same duties on every agent regardless of price. A physical street address inside the state, with the Secretary of State's form stating outright that no PO Box and no PMB will be accepted. Somebody actually present at that address through ordinary business hours. Prior consent given in a record before the designation is filed. Prompt handoff of anything served.

A $249 agent satisfies that list. A $99 agent satisfies the same list in the same way. There is no enhanced tier of compliance available for more money, because the state does not offer one. What the extra $150 a year buys is the logo on the invoice, and whether that is worth it is a real judgment call that only you can make with your own money.

Note the PMB detail while you are here, because it catches people. Washington does not merely say no PO boxes. The form names the private mailbox by its three-letter abbreviation and rules it out explicitly, which closes the loophole that mailbox storefronts elsewhere have been used to open.

Changing Your Registered Agent From LegalZoom in Washington

Washington titles the paperwork a Statement of Change/Designation of Registered Agent, gives it no number, and accepts it either on paper or through its online portal, addressed to the Washington Secretary of State. Nothing is charged for recording it, a zero the state confirms in three separate places including a checkbox on the document itself.

Sequence matters more than speed. Washington requires your entity to keep an agent named at all times, and the change form gives you no way to vacate the position, only to fill it with someone new. So the record never shows a blank, and cancelling LegalZoom first would not create one anyway; it would simply leave their name on your public record while nobody is being paid to answer to it. One shortcut is worth knowing if your timing cooperates. A new agent can be designated inside the annual report itself, which means a move landing close to your anniversary month can travel in a filing you already owed, with no separate document to prepare.
